Hilton residents are raising concerns about the continued use of glyphosate-based weed killers in the village. Despite growing awareness of the risks, South Derbyshire District Council has gone ahead with its annual spraying programme, leaving many worried about the impact on health, pets, and local wildlife.
What is Glyphosate and Why is it a Concern?
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in many weed killers. It is widely used to control unwanted plants, but research has linked it to several health and environmental risks:
-
Health concerns – The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015. Some studies also suggest links to neurological issues and organ damage.
-
Risks to pets – Local dog owners have reported pets falling ill after walking in recently sprayed areas. Symptoms include sickness, skin irritation, respiratory problems, and lethargy.
-
Biodiversity loss – Glyphosate kills insects, which has a knock-on effect on plants and animals that rely on them, reducing biodiversity and disrupting ecosystems.
-
Water contamination – The chemical is water-soluble, meaning it can wash into ponds and streams, harming amphibians and aquatic life that are crucial to the food chain.
Hilton Residents Speak Out
Local councillor Jayne Davies has been campaigning for an end to glyphosate spraying in Hilton. She worked closely with the council’s environmental department last year to highlight the dangers, but says her concerns have been ignored.
“With South Derbyshire District Council declaring a climate emergency in 2023, it’s frustrating that they are still using glyphosate. We need to come together as a community and say this isn’t acceptable.” – Cllr Jayne Davies
Residents have already reported cases of dogs becoming sick after walking in areas that have been sprayed. With more awareness of the dangers, many believe the council should be using safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
How You Can Help
A petition has been launched to urge the council to stop using glyphosate in Hilton. By signing, you can help bring this issue to the next full council meeting and push for a change in local policy.
